Tuesday, May 9
5:00 – 9:00 Art Show/Sale and Open Mic
Lawton Academy middle and high schools have been having fine art galas twice a year for eleven years now. These galas exhibit the art work and fine arts performances the students have worked on all semester. It was organizer Michelle Smith’s dream to one day make this open to students from all over the city. Her students this year decided the time had come. They wanted students from all over to have a place to exhibit and sell their art, and they wanted local student performers to have a place to play to increase their fan base and potentially gain other gigs. The kids chose “580Fest” as the name because there are so few things offered for kids in the 580 area code. OKC and Tulsa get everything. They can call us “shady 580,” but we’re going to throw our own shade when people see how talented the kids from this area are!
Chalk Art Contest
Individuals or teams (up to four) of eligible students will register for a 4’ square in which to draw their design. Contestants must bring their own chalk/supplies. All drawing will be judged at 7:30 p.m., and awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The pieces will remain in tact (barring bad weather) for the following evening’s festivities. A concession stand will be set up, but contestants may also bring their own food/beverages. No alcohol or tobacco products permitted on the premises. The public is welcome to come and watch.
Attendees must be eligible students, and each must bring his/her own source of music with headphones. The point of the silent dance is to jam out to your own tunes together! The dance will go from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m.
Eligible participants may bring art to show or to sell. All art must have the name of the artist, the artist’s grade, and a designation of sale price or “not for sale” displayed. The artist may also include medium and title of the piece if so desired. A digital picture of the art to be displayed must be attached to the entry form for approval. Photography and film are also welcome. Film, however, must be looped and playing on a laptop or tablet. If approved, artists may bring their pieces to set up during the Chalk Art Contest. Pieces should be mounted with something that enables the artist to hang it on a hook for the display. Sculpture and crafts will have table area for display. All art work will be removed at the conclusion of the art festival (9:00 p.m.) Any pieces left there will be stored at the school for pickup at a time arranged with Lawton Academy administration.
The Art Show/Sale itself will occur on Tuesday, May 9, from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. The pieces will be seen earlier in the day by Lawton Academy families participating in our internal art festival. Potential buyers can leave contact information with LAAS administration to give to the artist that evening.
Open Mic shows are typically for solo to small ensemble acts. We will have four “stages” for performance set up. Three will have only one mic, but one will be a little larger, with four mics and a drum set and keyboard available. One of the smaller stages will have a piano available. Two will have a port for playing music from a phone. Performance types include (but are not limited to) singing, dancing, playing instruments, acting, performing poetry, and performing another type of talent you might have. Performances should be void of vulgarity. Performers will be scheduled in slots of 10 minutes. Set up and tear down is included in that ten minutes. Feel free to advertise YouTube Channels or performances, or to sell CDs or distribute flyers during your time.
Participants must be able to show that they are currently enrolled in a grade between 6th and 12th in a public or private school. Home schoolers can provide proof of grade through a contact at a home school co-op or through a community member (like a pastor). Participants from the 405 area code are welcome, if they want to drive that far! This event is intended to give secondary students a place to celebrate fine arts together and to display and advertise their talent, possibly even profiting from the display.
There is no charge for any part of this festival. Concession stands will be open just because participants will be here during the dinner hour. Those concessions will cost, but you can bring your own food/drink as long as there is no alcohol or tobacco included. The public is welcome and encouraged to come to all but the Silent Disco, which is for school-aged participants only. Lawton Academy will have several adult chaperones and security to ensure safety. Parking is limited.
Print the form after filling it out and attach it (and any accompanying artwork ) to an email sent to email@example.com . On the regarding line, please put “580Fest Registration Form.”
